The European Commission (Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport, DG MOVE) operates the TENtec information system, which provides geographical and technical information on the trans-European transport networks (TEN-T). Among other things, this information serves to keep the European institutions informed of the progress made in implementing the trans-European transport network.
TENtec enables the European Commission to create interactive maps, which can also be accessed by the general public. This benefits all parties involved in TEN-T policy and project implementation and also enhances transparency. In addition, TENtec provides information on the financial and technical implementation of EU-funded projects. The TENtec database supports analyses to monitor the extent to which the EU Member States have implemented the technical requirements of TEN-T and to carry out data analyses to evolve the TEN-T policy and relevant EU financial instruments. Furthermore, TENtec is used for data evaluations of other European transport policy issues, such as the alternative fuels infrastructure (AFIR).
TENtec is being evolved by DG MOVE in cooperation with the EU Member States. In future, the system will allow automated data exchange so that more recent data can be supplied from national databases and information systems. At European level, this is being coordinated between technical experts of DG MOVE and the EU Member States. At national level, the Federal Ministry of Transport is working with the Federal Highway and Transport Research Institute (BASt), the Federal Waterways and Shipping Agency (GDWS) and DB InfraGO AG within the scope of a TENtec collaborative project. They are advised by the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG). This project is conducted with financial assistance from the EU.
