On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV), the Federal Office for Goods Transport assists the Federal Government in the provision of aid measures to refugees from Ukraine.

The situation in Ukraine is developing very dynamically and the number of persons fleeing from the war is increasing. Refugees arriving in Germany seek protection and shelter.

Within the context of the refugee relief programme, the Federal Office for Goods Transport, together with Deutsche Bahn (DB), coordinates the transport and allocation of refugees from Ukraine on behalf of the BMDV and the Federal Ministry of the Interior. From the central arrival hubs in Berlin, Cottbus, Frankfurt/Oder and Hannover (planned) as starting points, buses and trains travel to accommodation facilities and other destinations across Germany.

Arriving refugees are provided with necessary information during their journey to be able to make use of more support measures at their place of destination.

On 5 March 2022, the Federal Office for Goods Transport set up a situation centre where all incoming information are pooled and necessary measures are coordinated. Liaison persons of the Federal Ministry of the Interior as well as the German Red Cross support the crisis management group of the Federal Office for Goods Transport to ensure smooth coordination of aid measures between the involved authorities and aid organisations.
