To celebrate the 25th anniversary of German reunification in 2015, the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) introduced the German Unity Cycle Route. The German Unity Cycle Route is a remarkable cycleway that connects the cities of Bonn and Berlin. It symbolizes the merging of the German-German transport infrastructure since reunification in 1990 and runs through the following seven federal states: North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Hesse, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Brandenburg and Berlin. With a route length of more than 1,100 kilometres, this unique cycleway takes you across the former intra-German border and past around 100 historical sites and memorials.
The well-signposted route leads through varied landscapes and can be explored in different stages or in one single adventure. It connects not only landscapes and regions but also people and their stories, and is suitable for cyclists of all levels.
Sophisticated service points with high quality standards have been installed along the route. These service points provide digital information about the route and nearby sights as well as practical services. Cyclists travelling on e-bikes can benefit from charging facilities while taking a rest.
As a national project to promote cycling, the service points were planned and financed by the Federal Ministry of Transport in cooperation with the federal states and municipalities involved. The service points are operated and maintained by partners on site who own the stations. The most recent service points are installed on the premises of the Federal Ministry of Transport in Bonn and Berlin. They represent the starting and end points of this special long-distance cycleway.
In the summer of 2019, the German-Iranian photographer Mina Esfandiari cycled along the German Unity Cycle Route from West to East (Bonn –> Berlin).
