The Federal Ministry of Transport has continuously, and in the end successfully, lobbied the European Commission and the other EU Member States for the mandatory installation of turn assist systems. In accordance with EU Regulation 2019/2144 on type-approval requirements, which was promulgated on 16 December 2019, turn assist systems (referred to as “blind spot information systems” in the Regulation) became mandatory as of 6 July 2022 for new vehicle types and as of 7 July 2024 for new vehicles.
It is thanks to the initiative of the Federal Ministry of Transport that all new HGVs, buses and coaches with a maximum permissible weight of more than 3.5 tonnes (vehicle categories M2, M3, N2 and N3) will have to be equipped with turn assist systems in the future.
Since the beginning of the funding programme in 2019, the Ministry provided a total funding amount of 58,786,500 euros for 39,191 turn assist systems.
The funding guidelines ended on 31 December 2025. Since then, the Ministry no longer subsidizes the installation of turn assist systems.
